It’s the one event on the Australian drag racing calendar that attracts some of the biggest workshops from both Australia and overseas and produces more excitement in one day than any other event in the world. I’m talking about none other than the annual Haltech Compak Attak held at the famous Sydney Dragway formally Western Sydney International Dragway (WSID). With the event featuring everything from 6 second passes, Sydney’s wildest show cars and beautiful women strutting their stuff, Compak Attak definitely lived up to its name as it does year in year out.
An early start to the day was scheduled with the Street Compact class kicking off qualifying at 8.30am. Qualifying continued with the minor classes following the Street Compact group. When 9.45am finally arrived, it was time for the big boys to come out and play with Pro Turbo and Pro Compact having their first qualifying runs. Some quick passes were laid down during qualifying with Sam Sadek reeling off a few low 7 second passes in his Mazda RX3 Coupe. The newly purchased SDR Motorsport Datsun 1200 was also impressive dipping into the 7 second barrier in only its second meeting at the track. The PAC Performance crew were once again in strong attendance with Rodney Rehayem’s Mazda RX3 easing its way to constant 7.4 second ETs. Just when the crowd thought they had seen it all from the PAC stable, Rocky Rehayem and his unstoppable Mazda 6 stopped the clocks at 6.795 at a whopping 209.98MPH making the car one of the fastest rotary powered vehicles on the planet. The joy was clearly visible down on the start line with George Rehayem and the crew sharing hugs and high fives all round.
Down in the pits things were also starting to heat up with the Show N Shine in full flight. 2 SUS Custom Resprays had a barrage of cars led by Bassa’s ‘SUSRX7’ Mazda RX7. The Mazda didn’t fail to please the crowds with engine bay dominated by chrome and an audio setup ready to bring a house down. Mouhamed Ibrahim and the crew from Queen St Smash made their made presence felt upon arrival with their famous ‘QUEENS’ Ferrari 360 Modena playing second fiddle to his latest project. A pearl white Ferrari 360 Spyder with red trim complimented by white stitching and a set of 22’’ Asanti wheels on the rear. Both Ferraris went hand in hand with the new car appropriately wearing the number plates ‘KINGZ’.
An obvious absentee from the early rounds of qualifying was Malcolm Glassett and his 2JZ powered Toyota Solara better known as ‘The Hurricane’. After speaking with a member of the crew, it was apparent the team had struggled to get a lot of boost into the car. When the car finally hit the race track in the late qualifying sessions, ‘The Hurricane’ reeled off a 6.62 second pass which was approved by the crowd with a round of applause. The Titan Motorsports Scion was super consistent all day getting a handle on the track early on and dipping into the high 6 second barrier all day and managing the best of a 6.66 @ 212MPH late in the day. The man himself Joe Signorelli had the task of piloting his 2JZ powered Toyota Celica all day and in the early rounds of qualifying showed the crowd he was a serious contender to take out the event with a mid 6 second pass.
Archie Kajewski and the crew from Mazfix Racing also made the trip down from sunny QLD with Archie’s 28’’x9’’ tired RX7 now owned by Chris Hall and Craig Melbourne’s newly purchased ‘PROLUX’. Archie managed to pedal Craig’s ‘PROLUX’ to the best of a 7.2 @ 193MPH before clutch and gearbox problems ended their day early.
A big shout out goes to Ray Box and the crew from Sport Compact Group for organizing a very smooth event. If the 2010 Haltech Compak Attack was anything to go by, Jamboree 2010 should be an event to remember!
